　　The searchlight of a February moon

' f8 Q/ K" ?0 l9 H' H1 [2 @+ l: D　　bare trees black railing
4 I9 n1 E1 L! e6 p: q  ?　　an eastern star set like a pearl atop a steeple
' G) r! w3 U& M0 c) P' f6 M　　that shadows the doorway
　　where the one-armed card shark squats
　　shuffling his deck on a milk crate
　　waiting for the No. 6 bus to discharge
　　the off-duty cop the seamstress
　　the drunken mechanic and the clerk on crutches
$ J! E2 v* K4 d# L　　who pauses before his building to watch
　　the mechanic lose three dollars at blackjack
　　and then stiffly ascends the five flights
) U! L4 A' o* v3 ^& T　　to his two rooms on a shaftway
　　hanging his coat on a hook
　　and sitting down at the table
& B, F! }  b" X　　on which this morning he placed
. |5 [0 K" o7 `. u　　a soup bowl and spoon
　　a tin of crackers and the crossword
! {! o! r$ V, Z7 Q　　puzzle he had been laboring over
　　beneath the gaze of his late wife
! ]2 Z8 ?! V5 h( N9 V7 \% [　　her color photograph propped up in a small frame
　　a young woman in a boxy dress and felt cap
　　waving shyly by the edge of a lake
. j* }, t- A( Z: ]: D　　where over her shoulder beneath a clear sky
& J! }; |" ?  m: m& q% l　　a sailboat rides the wind
+ P! W: Y$ d5 t9 }% i8 l2 a: F　　passengers on the polished deck
　　gazing at the glowing mountain peaks
$ M  F9 d! z5 V5 U* I9 Y- Q& h　　the cypresses lining the shore
　　and the pink palazzi with ancient gardens
3 Z% ^# r) Z% K1 Z3 V/ f3 p2 _　　these men and women in white
" _' j. ~. `5 t6 Z6 \　　who seem to live upon the water
　　gliding among themselves oblivious to strife
. E3 l. B- j+ _, |3 w) H* J7 k　　and all else that wears a body down
! Q1 u4 ]2 g4 M! |* k) \* Y　　some sipping from crystal goblets
* ?, D$ P: C2 Y& B8 @　　others just drinking in the light
