We read the fairy tale, while glowing coals
' ^" S) C) r8 d3 s" E+ w( b Builded its pictures. There before our eyes5 J* A2 o' ^* y% g' D
We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone# D- {0 o9 y, j: D7 e8 }5 s
Uprear itself, the distant ceiling hung6 Y$ j( T7 c6 d; y' ^1 A" M' b" m& @
With pendent stalactites like frozen vines;1 @- T9 D% r! I1 M
And all along the walls at intervals,: \- s, u- `0 s* } c
Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,- F. d5 O: B3 x2 V) Z
And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves/ \; h1 s0 {8 Y
Divided where there peered a laughing face.
0 a3 Q' L9 W) Q+ \ The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,
% K; ^( t8 C; z. d x& S8 u A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone." o1 j5 j+ U- \) d
High pointed windows pierced the southern wall1 z! P& z/ x! ?( A" q4 c
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires
/ W' \* i7 G8 B6 L. N( ?, v To stain the tessellated marble floor
5 H3 F& J4 H7 D# m With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;
* t7 H- D. }7 I0 u2 q+ M$ t And in the shade beyond the further door,
* J+ {1 P' A. _8 V) B& E Its sober squares of black and white were hid
! v% ?& |! o9 n3 A+ ^, M0 C Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob

The Christening.

About the entrance parted as the guests
+ D% g" R& D5 Q+ X4 n0 Z$ S* f Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.! w* ?8 c# e7 R6 H" u) Z4 ^3 |
Our eager fancies noted all they brought,
z2 @0 P( w q& k9 X$ L The glorious, unattainable delights!+ M$ D8 k$ j# d3 t4 T2 X
But always there was one unbidden guest6 h2 }7 n# h4 `# _5 l
Who cursed the child and left it bitterness., T+ u$ Z8 C' ?( Z" l
The fire falls asunder, all is changed,
- j9 Q. m2 ?3 t) F8 k. ` j I am no more a child, and what I see u% \! g' a/ _/ F
Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.

0 @7 ?. f; n2 _9 X The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:
* A( ^9 M2 T" ?* \ Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name
9 M1 Y, [- W9 p. k4 S Which honors all who bear it, and the power
0 y5 Z# u) o7 _/ D Of making words obedient. This is much;9 Q9 b% N# L2 h5 q4 P( g7 u
But overshadowing all is still the curse,
% N+ v4 A. W5 Q" n; [0 y+ z" e% s# [ That never shall I be fulfilled by love!
" P0 E' C) F4 c9 |( a Along the parching highroad of the world
' { ]7 G0 Q" g0 t7 j. z No other soul shall bear mine company.
- b+ U, k& K7 I/ n Always shall I be teased with semblances,0 ~4 J6 e+ u8 h% t
With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
% Z1 n# b6 k2 Z. `1 u3 t Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
7 a8 ?1 k3 ^# K8 _" {% S: B3 m A Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering
% V$ O& A( h- D( M$ X8 y Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds.+ ]; e! R- v9 F, ~" T
So I behold my visions on the ground' ]8 s1 [0 {/ E' c# z2 i' G
No longer radiant, an ignoble heap
0 A+ L0 h9 ^5 f: L Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,
6 E4 \1 F9 l) Y, K9 X: O Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps) R4 r7 d" M& |
Force me forever through the passing days.
