  out by the grasses
  Q. H% e$ J. E% t- z  Sweeping triumphant across it, it wound between hedges of roses
# \" d$ j9 J7 f( l/ B$ o3 Q) k  Whose blossoms were poised above leaves as pond lilies float on
. f+ M/ x; u: W$ P  the water,8 C; t% O9 U% ~2 P$ K
  While hidden by bloom in a hawthorn a bird filled the morning with! C! _* y$ `1 B/ t% Q! ]9 P
  singing.- L9 a7 A0 H3 z6 D7 a8 K# a" L9 D
  It widened a highway, majestic, stretching ever
* X" {3 ^' W/ x8 q- T; B0 t  to distant horizons,. R3 c/ ?6 x- O+ A0 y  P
  Where shadows of tree-branches wavered, vague outlines invaded by$ ^( D& g' `4 k
  sunshine;5 S, ?* R2 P; ^" M/ T- d
  No sound but the wind as it whispered the secrets of earth to the* X: u9 E  N2 R& b
  flowers,/ Q) b" T% Y% a3 H3 P. z
  And the hum of the yellow bees, honey-laden and dusty with pollen.
+ T' m. x: J8 T1 w" \  And Summer said, "Come, follow onward, with no thought save the
. v+ q6 y2 z$ X- _  longing
5 Y' |' ?- O4 X6 L( J  to wander,, n  G) O" i% U: z  N2 Z3 _# M2 Y$ M
  The wind, and the bees, and the flowers, all singing the great song
1 O. A6 y$ c# y/ i: h4 b' l  of Nature,
' e; T1 ~$ o( @$ N# A$ A! V  Are minstrels of change and of promise, they herald the joy of the) U' q* e) D/ R  E2 T8 u+ ^
  Future."
" b" i# [7 R6 p4 ^  Later the solitude vanished, confused and distracted' D5 s( }7 s/ ~
  the road2 ^" ?" ^: H) k' H" w
  Where many were seeking and jostling. Left behind were* k2 ?9 ]5 H& G  c- H
  the trees
* G# w- d3 A1 H  and the flowers,9 D" T2 ]* L. {
  The half-realized beauty of quiet, the sacred unconscious communing.* |  |5 s) H+ _$ I0 C* t9 z8 O/ i
  And now he is come to a river, a line of gray, sullen water,) F1 d$ h/ Q# g3 C1 {! }
  Not blue and splashing, but dark, rolling somberly on to the ocean.4 `! h- i. ^: ]; ]
  But on the far side is a city whose windows flame gold in the sunset.7 {/ e9 b. R& p; }4 x
  It lies fair and shining before him, a gem set betwixt sky and water,7 w4 ]0 z: U$ {* H
  And spanning the river a bridge, frail promise to longing desire,
& I0 l1 a# Q% ~9 s  Flung by man in his infinite courage, across the stern force of' S+ S- M6 D0 B
  the water;
3 D' j4 T0 g! F+ [  And he looks at the river and fears, the bridge is so slight,8 @! \0 I5 `. o- u
  yet he ventures  X/ }, f6 L2 D' E) G& J
  His life to its fragile keeping, if it fails the waves will engulf
/ I/ x. q3 J# {- }  him.9 z& n1 p) l3 a7 K) T. j2 l
  O Arches! be strong to uphold him, and bear him across to the city,
1 k! E- v0 h1 _* p. U. U* G  The beautiful city whose spires still glow with the fires of sunset!
