Not blue and splashing, but dark, rolling somberly on to the ocean.4 `! h- i. ^: ]; ]
But on the far side is a city whose windows flame gold in the sunset.7 {/ e9 b. R& p; }4 x
It lies fair and shining before him, a gem set betwixt sky and water,7 w4 ]0 z: U$ {* H
And spanning the river a bridge, frail promise to longing desire,
& I0 l1 a# Q% ~9 s Flung by man in his infinite courage, across the stern force of' S+ S- M6 D0 B
the water;
3 D' j4 T0 g! F+ [ And he looks at the river and fears, the bridge is so slight,8 @! \0 I5 `. o- u
yet he ventures X/ }, f6 L2 D' E) G& J
His life to its fragile keeping, if it fails the waves will engulf

O Arches! be strong to uphold him, and bear him across to the city,
